Share market holidays are an essential information for all investors and traders. These holidays play a special role in the investment or trading strategies you undertake.
Typically, stock markets in any country open only five days a week. And everyone knows this thing well. The stock markets are closed on Saturday and Sunday.
For different segments of the securities market such as equity market, currency market and commodity market, some holidays may be common and some may be different.
But apart from these normal day holidays, some share market holidays are declared which are usually determined according to the cultural activities and practices of the country. So sometimes we get the illusion that – is the market open today?
However, share market holidays are available on the website of all the main stock exchanges. Nevertheless, I am describing here for educational purpose so that if you come on the SubhMantra, then you can easily know and become aware.
Stock Market Holidays USA
- Stock market holidays on both the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ are very similar.
- They are usually closed on these 9 occasions every year. These are –
1. New Year’s Day | 4. Good Friday | 7. Labor Day |
2. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day | 5. Memorial Day | 8. Thanksgiving Day |
3. Presidents’ Day (Washington’s Birthday) | 6. Independence Day | 9. Christmas Day |
- If the declared holiday is on Saturday, the stock market holiday is usually on Friday. Likewise, markets usually close on the following Monday if there is a holiday on Sunday.
- An additional but partial holiday in the US stock market occurs on two occasions i.e., Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day [market open, 9:30 AM to 01:00 PM ET (European Time)].
- To avoid undue market fluctuations after the holidays, it is rare for the US stock market to be continuously closed for 3-days.

Importance of Share Market Holidays
The focus of share market holidays, especially the traders, should be kept in mind, so that they can trade appropriately.
Whether you are preparing for swing trading with the help of technical indicators or BTST stocks, you have to keep in mind the stock market holidays. In option trading as well as future trading, the importance of share market holidays increases even more.
It is commonly seen that before some special holidays, such as Independence Day and Thanksgiving Day in the US, a rally appears in the market. Share markets often rally ahead of long weekends. But it is not necessary to be so.
