Green Hydrogen stocks may perform better in the times to come. This is because green hydrogen is developing globally as the most revolutionary eco-friendly fuel. We can really call it the power of the future.

Do you know why green hydrogen and its related stocks have become so important? Let’s go in detail.

Undoubtedly, most people are conscious of our environment. But unfortunately we have harmed our earth and environment beyond limits.

It is well known that the increase of CO2 percentage in the atmosphere (green house effect) due to improper consumption of fossil fuels is increasing the temperature around us.

Climate change happening today has raised a question mark on the existence of human beings!

This concern has disappointed our environmentalists and scientists who are warning about the urgent need to reduce global carbon emissions to zero.

According to the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report, the world leaders agreed to limit non-renewable energy sources at a global summit.

The goal is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and prevent global warming from increasing more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels by 2050.

It is the need of the hour that we find new alternative sources of energy for the betterment of our environment and our earth with zero carbon emissions.

In such a challenging situation, green hydrogen can prove to be a boon. But the question must be coming in your mind that why only green hydrogen as a fuel?

Why Hydrogen as a Fuel?

While on the one hand fossil fuels have made human life easier, on the other hand its excessive consumption has caused a lot of damage to the environment.

In the last decades, many alternative sources of energy that can be used as fuel have been explored such as wind energy, bio-mass gas, tidal energy, etc. But they are not fully capable of meeting our needs.

While if we talk about hydrogen, it –

  • is a clean fuel source,
  • is available in sufficient quantity on our earth,
  • produces only water when consumed in a fuel cell,
  • is extremely environmental friendly if extracted in the form of green hydrogen,
  • can be produced from a variety of domestic resources, such as natural gas, nuclear power, biomass, and renewable power like solar and wind.

These qualities make it an attractive fuel option for transportation and electricity generation applications. It can be used in cars, in houses, for portable power, and in many more applications.

Types of Hydrogen as a Fuel

The types of hydrogen are determined based on the specificity of the production process (including the energy source). These are –

Green Hydrogen – It is produced through the electrolysis of water using renewable sources of energy,

Blue Hydrogen – It is produced by splitting natural gas into hydrogen and CO2 where carbon dioxide is captured and stored,

Grey Hydrogen – It is obtained by the same process as blue hydrogen is obtained but here CO2 is released into the atmosphere,

Pink Hydrogen – Water is electrolysised to obtain pink hydrogen but here nuclear energy is used as the source for the splitting of water molecules.

Yellow Hydrogen – To obtain this, electrolysis is performed with solar energy as the source.

What is Green Hydrogen?

When only renewable sources of energy are used in the production of hydrogen so that there is no harm to the environment, the hydrogen thus obtained is named green hydrogen.

In this process the splitting of water molecules into its components, hydrogen and oxygen, is done by electrolysis where oxygen is released into the atmosphere.

Challenges in Handling Hydrogen as a Fuel

Despite so many advantages, green hydrogen has not been widely used till now. Because there are many challenges in using green hydrogen as a fuel.

The extraction of hydrogen in its pure molecular form is in itself quite difficult.

According to a NASA report, even small amounts of liquid hydrogen can be explosive when combined with air, and only a small amount of energy is needed to ignite it.

Both its explosiveness and extremely low temperatures make it a challenge to handle safely.

Let us now know about those green hydrogen stocks, whose future is looking bright.

Green Hydrogen Stocks in the US

In the United States and European countries, green hydrogen is being used at an advanced level.

The long-term outlook for the green energy industry is optimistic. The global fuel cell market is projected to grow from $10 billion in 2019 to reach $33 billion in 2027.

Renewable energy and fuel cell stocks are expected to benefit greatly from the Biden administration.

Biden has pledged to spend nearly $2 trillion on clean-energy infrastructure over the next four years. Mainly green hydrogen stocks are-

1. Linde (NYSE: LIN)

Expectations of Green Hydrogen Stocks in India

The green hydrogen process in India is in its infancy. But the two major announcements in the recent past have spurred a hope towards India’s leading role in the field of green hydrogen.

One is that the Government of India has announced the launch of Hydrogen Energy Mission (HEM) on the budget day of the financial year 2021-22 & 2022-23.

The second is the formation of a new energy transition coalition called IH2A (India Hydrogen Alliance). The alliance will be led by Indian energy conglomerate Reliance with domestic and global power companies.

The main purpose of this alliance is –

  • to help commercialize hydrogen technologies to build the net zero Carbon energy pathways,
  • to build the Hydrogen economy and supply chain,
  • to build the use of blue and green hydrogen production and storage,
  • to promote hydrogen-use industrial clusters and transport use cases based on hydrogen powered fuel cells in India.

Green Hydrogen Stocks of India

Green Hydrogen will not only have a good impact on the environment but will also have a positive impact on the economy of the country where there will be readiness to implement zero carbon emission policy.

India has already stepped in this field. Many industries and companies associated with green hydrogen will be involved in this. Some of the major names of which can be as follows in India –

1. Advanced Material companies such as Tata Groups, MTAR Technologies, etc.

MTAR Technologies manufactures electrolyzers that break down water into hydrogen and oxygen to produce methane-free hydrogen, which can be used in many fields to generate electricity.

2. Speciality Chemicals companies such as Tata Chemicals Ltd.

3. Fuel companies, especially renewable energy (green energy) companies such as Reliance Energy Ltd., Adani Power, NTPC, AcmeSolar, Greenko, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd.

4. Auto sectors such as Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra

Conclusion

It is possible for investors to wait in a stocks for sometimes. But as the consumption of Green Hydrogen is going to use commercially, especially in the transportation, the green hydrogen stocks will be skyrocketed.

It would be better for investors to do fundamental analysis of green hydrogen stocks globally. And to invest if find fruitful.
